A large crowd of supporters gathered at the National Assembly complex on Wednesday to show solidarity with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as tensions between her and the Senate leadership continued to intensify.
The protest took place just as the Senate Ethics Committee, led by Senator Neda Imaseun, prepared to begin its investigation into Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s alleged defiance of Senate regulations.
In an attempt to disperse the crowd, security personnel deployed tear gas, but the demonstrators held their ground, regrouping despite the heavy security measures in place.
The protesters accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of working to silence and discredit women, demanding that President Bola Tinubu step in to address the situation.
They stressed that allegations of sexual misconduct should not be overlooked, stating that such matters are critical human rights issues that require urgent attention.
This investigation, which was approved by a unanimous Senate vote, stems from Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s heated confrontation in the chamber, further fueling the controversy surrounding the case.
