Asaba, Delta State — Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has appointed Promise Ogumu as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Youth Mobilisation, a move that has drawn interest across Delta’s political circles and youth constituencies.
Ogumu, a biochemist and environmentalist, is known for grassroots outreach and philanthropy through his foundation, which provides support to vulnerable communities. He previously coordinated youth mobilisation for the 2023 presidential and gubernatorial campaigns in Ika North East, and contested the Ika North East State Constituency seat in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking after receiving his appointment letter at the Secretary to the State Government’s office in Asaba, Ogumu thanked Governor Oborevwori for “finding him worthy,” describing the governor as a “promise keeper.” He pledged to deepen outreach to young people and align his office with the administration’s development priorities. Ogumu also lauded former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, crediting him with laying “a good foundation” that his successor is “keeping to” through ongoing project delivery and youth-focused initiatives.
The SSA portfolio on youth mobilisation is expected to play a larger role as the Oborevwori administration expands skills, entrepreneurship and civic-engagement programmes targeted at Deltan youths. Government insiders say Ogumu’s brief will include coordinating youth stakeholders across senatorial districts, strengthening communication between government and community-based groups, and supporting implementation of job-creation and empowerment schemes.
Political observers note that the appointment signals Oborevwori’s intent to broaden his youth coalition beyond party lines by tapping a figure with APC campaign experience but strong grassroots credibility. Supporters of the move argue that Ogumu’s background in community work, coupled with his professional training, positions him to translate policy into practical programmes at ward and local government levels.
“With this appointment,” a senior government aide said, “the administration is doubling down on youth inclusion as a pillar of its development agenda.”
Ogumu is expected to assume duties immediately, working with the Ministry of Youth Development and allied agencies to ramp up mobilization around skills acquisition, civic participation, and social-impact projects across the state.
