Abuja — President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to renowned Christian evangelist Dr. Uma Ukpai, describing him as “an anointed crusader of the faith” whose ministry helped ignite a wave of revival across Nigeria and parts of Africa in the 1980s. Ukpai died at the age of 80.
In a statement of condolence, the President said Ukpai was “one of the leaders in the Lord’s army” and a “firebrand” whose mission was to unite Christians, build bridges across faiths, and promote peace and harmony.
“With a heavy heart, I mourn the passing of one of God’s generals, Dr. Uma Ukpai,” Tinubu said. “He was filled with fire and ice for the gospel and restoring humanity to discipline, love, and good neighbourliness.”
Tinubu recalled Ukpai’s landmark citywide crusades, including “Greater Ibadan for Christ” (1982) and “Greater Lagos for Christ” (1985), which drew massive crowds and left what he called a “phenomenal” spiritual and social impact. He praised the evangelist’s humanitarian footprint, citing the charities, schools, and hospitals established for the underprivileged through his ministry.
Born in Asaga, Ohafia (Abia State), Ukpai rose from humble beginnings to become an international evangelist, founding the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association and playing a leading role in the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). His preaching and mentorship shaped generations of clergy and lay leaders across denominations.
“Dr. Ukpai’s mission was clearly to unite the Christian fold and different faiths and spread peace and harmony,” the President said. “He was a builder, building men and bridges linking different faiths, people, tongues, and tribes.”
Tinubu added that Ukpai had “fulfilled his divine mission” and “fought the good fight,” praying that God would grant him eternal rest. He extended condolences to Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai, the evangelist’s widow, their children, and members of the ministry, urging them to take solace in his enduring legacy.
“I encourage them to find comfort in the great legacy of this beloved servant of God,” Tinubu said.
Arrangements for Ukpai’s funeral and memorial services were yet to be announced at press time.
