Nkpor–Nnobi Road, Anambra State — Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, killing two people and leaving several others injured.
Sources said the assailants, who were dressed in what appeared to be police and military uniforms, ambushed the convoy and opened fire on the pilot vehicle. A police officer in the lead car was shot dead, and his rifle and uniform were taken away by the gunmen.
A woman who was reportedly using her mobile phone to record the incident was also shot dead at the scene.
In the chaos, a nearby shop owner, who rushed out to see what was happening, was struck by bullets and suffered severe injuries. Witnesses said he lost a significant amount of blood before being evacuated for treatment. He is scheduled for surgery to remove bullet fragments and is said to be in stable condition.
The escort leader also sustained gunshot injuries and has undergone surgery, with doctors reportedly optimistic about his full recovery. The pilot car in the convoy was riddled with bullets.
Dr. Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.
In a statement, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, former press secretary to Dr. Ngige, confirmed the incident and said the former governor had been fully briefed.
“I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured. He also extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack,” Chukwuelobe said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the attack, leaving many residents anxious over rising insecurity along major routes in the state.
