Troops, working alongside local vigilante groups, have reportedly killed a notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Sani, popularly known as Yellow, during a security operation in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Security sources said the operation was carried out on Friday after armed bandits attacked construction workers near Dan Jibga Market. Troops and vigilantes reportedly engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the death of Kachalla Sani and several of his associates.
The slain commander was believed to be one of the most feared bandit leaders operating in parts of Zamfara. He was allegedly linked to numerous attacks on communities, kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and other violent crimes across the state. Security analysts described his death as a significant setback for armed criminal groups operating in the North-West.
Residents of communities affected by years of bandit violence reportedly welcomed the development, expressing hope that the operation would improve security and reduce attacks on villages and major roads.
A security source familiar with the operation said the troops acted swiftly after receiving intelligence on the movement of the armed group.
“The operation was launched immediately after the attack, and the troops, working with local vigilantes, successfully neutralised the gang leader.”
Although military authorities had not issued a detailed official statement at the time of reporting, security sources said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for persistent insecurity in Zamfara and neighbouring states.
The latest development comes as security forces continue intensified offensives against bandit groups across Nigeria’s North-West. Recent operations have targeted forest hideouts and known criminal enclaves in a bid to weaken the operational capacity of armed gangs involved in kidnappings, cattle rustling and attacks on rural communities.
Security experts cautioned that while the reported elimination of a prominent commander represents an important operational success, sustained military pressure and improved intelligence sharing will be required to prevent other armed groups from filling the vacuum.
The Zamfara State Government has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to working with federal security agencies and local communities to restore peace across the state. Residents have also urged authorities to maintain the momentum of ongoing operations to ensure lasting security and enable displaced communities to return safely to their homes.
