Lawyer and human right activist, Dele Farotimi has been denied bail by the magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti in the cybercrime suit filed by the Inspector General of Police against Farotimi.
Farotimi was dragged to court for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti.
During the court hearing on Tuesday, the presiding magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, adjourned the ruling on the bail application filed by the defendant to December 20 and ordered that Farotimi be remanded in the state correctional cenre.
The adjournment came after the counsel to the police, Samson Osobu, argued that the bail application submitted by the defendant was incomplete and also, not properly filed.
However, the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti had on Monday, December 9 2024 granted Farotim ai N50m bail.
Recall that Farotimi was arrested in Lagos by the police and taken to Ekiti State, where he appeared before the magistrate court on Wednesday.
He was charged with defamation stemming from statements in his book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’ where he alleged that Babalola had compromised the Supreme Court.
