The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Dangote Refinery have reached a significant understanding after a high-level meeting, committing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting cooperation in the oil and gas sector.
According to officials present at the meeting, both parties agreed that closer collaboration was necessary to address challenges within the petroleum industry, particularly in areas of workers’ welfare, safety, and operational efficiency.
Furthermore, NUPENG and Dangote Refinery pledged to work together in ensuring a stable industrial environment. The proposed MoU is expected to set out clear frameworks for dispute resolution, improved communication, and long-term cooperation.
“This engagement is a positive step forward. We are committed to ensuring that workers’ rights are respected while also supporting the success of the Dangote Refinery project,” a NUPENG representative stated.
In response, officials from the Dangote Refinery assured the union of their readiness to maintain international best practices in operations and staff management.
In addition, energy analysts say the partnership could help strengthen Nigeria’s downstream sector. Transitioning from frequent disputes to structured cooperation, the MoU is seen as a proactive approach to stabilising the petroleum workforce at a time when energy security remains a national priority.
The signing of the MoU is expected to take place in the coming weeks. If fully implemented, stakeholders believe it could set a new precedent for labour–management relations in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
