A massive gas explosion struck Sabon Wuse in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, causing widespread destruction and heavy losses for local businesses. The blast occurred on Saturday night when a gas tanker exploded while offloading at a local filling station. Though no lives were lost, the destruction was severe, affecting several vehicles, shops, and foodstuffs.
The explosion sent shockwaves through the community, causing panic among residents. Witnesses described the fire as intense, with flames visible from different parts of the town. Many people ran out of their homes in fear as the disaster unfolded.
According to Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), emergency responders quickly assessed the situation, confirming the extensive damage.
This incident follows a series of similar tragedies in Nigeria. On January 18, a devastating petrol tanker explosion in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State claimed the lives of at least 96 people, leaving 69 others injured. The tragedy occurred when residents were caught in a fire while attempting to scoop petrol from a crashed tanker. Baba-Arah confirmed the high casualty count, stating that a mass burial was conducted for the victims, and 20 shops were also destroyed.
Nigeria has experienced multiple petrol tanker explosions in recent times. In October 2024, a similar blast in Jigawa State resulted in 147 fatalities. These recurring incidents highlight ongoing concerns about fuel transportation safety and emergency response measures.
The latest explosion in Sabon Wuse serves as another stark reminder of the dangers associated with fuel handling in Nigeria. Authorities and emergency agencies continue to assess the damage and work on measures to prevent future occurrences.
