An eight-month-old baby girl and an adult woman have died in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday along Ikorodu Road, Lagos.
The crash happened opposite Olabode House on Funsho Williams Avenue, between Anthony and Obanikoro bus stops, and left many residents and passers-by in shock.
According to the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, preliminary findings show that a red Tata long commercial bus, travelling at high speed from Palmgroove towards Anthony, lost mechanical and directional control. The vehicle reportedly veered off its lane, crossed the median and rammed into an oncoming Volkswagen commercial bus heading in the opposite direction.
The impact killed an adult female passenger in the Volkswagen bus on the spot, while an eight-month-old baby later died from injuries sustained in the collision.
Ten other passengers, including both drivers, sustained varying degrees of injuries. Six people were rescued from the Volkswagen bus and four from the Tata bus. LASTMA officials, assisted by members of the public, quickly commenced rescue operations, while the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals. Officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) removed the bodies of the deceased.
LASTMA officers also cordoned off the scene and cleared the wrecked vehicles to restore traffic flow along the busy corridor.
Bakare-Oki condoled with the families of the victims, especially the injured mother of the late infant, who is receiving treatment in hospital. He described the crash as tragic and urged motorists—particularly commercial drivers—to obey speed limits, drive with caution, and ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, especially braking systems.
He reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to saving lives through effective traffic management, rapid emergency response and continuous public sensitisation, and appealed to all road users to always prioritise safety.
