Ondo State, Nigeria – A devastating road accident on the Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway has claimed the lives of 30 people, the Ondo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed on Sunday.
The fatal crash occurred on Saturday evening at Onipetesi community in Odigbo Local Government Area when two commercial buses collided head-on and burst into flames.
Cause of the Accident
Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the vehicles was driving against traffic, leading to the head-on collision.
According to Ondo FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye:
- 28 victims were burnt beyond recognition.
- Two initially survived but later died on the way to the hospital.
Eyewitness Account
An eyewitness described the horrific scene:
“We heard a loud crash and rushed to the scene. Both vehicles were already in flames, and passengers were struggling to escape.”
FRSC officers arrived quickly and transported the only two survivors to the hospital. Tragically, both later succumbed to their injuries.
FRSC Urges Caution
In response to the tragedy, the FRSC commander urged motorists to:
Adhere to traffic rules and regulations
Avoid driving against traffic (wrong-way driving)
Maintain caution, especially on highways
