Brazilian defender Marcelo has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36, ending a distinguished career spanning over 15 years. The left-back, who earned 58 caps for Brazil, shared the news in a heartfelt video on social media, expressing gratitude for his journey and future aspirations in the sport.
Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007 at just 18 and became a club legend, winning 25 major trophies, including five Champions League and six La Liga titles. In 2021, he made history as Real Madrid’s first non-Spanish captain in 117 years.
Club president Florentino Perez praised Marcelo as one of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history, assuring him that the club will always be his home.
After leaving Madrid in 2022, Marcelo had a brief stint with Olympiacos before returning to his boyhood club, Fluminense, in 2023, where he played for two seasons.
Marcelo’s retirement marks the end of an era, leaving behind an inspiring legacy that will influence future generations. As he reflected, “Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, and so many magical nights at the Bernabéu—what a journey!”
