Two-time former heavyweight boxing champion and Olympic gold medallist Anthony Joshua has been discharged from a Lagos hospital following a road crash that claimed the lives of two of his closest associates on Monday.
Joshua sustained minor injuries when the Lexus SUV in which he was travelling collided with a stationary lorry on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a major route linking Ogun State to Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said in a statement on X that the 36-year-old was discharged from Duchess International Hospital on Wednesday after being declared “clinically fit” to continue his recovery at home.
Before leaving the hospital, Joshua and his mother visited a Lagos funeral home to pay their final respects to his two friends who died in the crash: long-time strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and trainer Latif Ayodele. The pair, both 36, were described by Joshua’s camp as “close friends and integral members” of his team. Their remains were being prepared for repatriation to the United Kingdom on Wednesday evening, according to officials.
Footage shared on social media earlier in the week showed the visibly dazed British-Nigerian star being helped from the wreckage of the black SUV moments after the collision. Nigerian authorities said the vehicle struck a parked heavy-duty truck on the carriageway.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a full investigation and declared the truck driver wanted after he allegedly fled the scene. Preliminary findings point to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as primary causes of the crash, both listed among the leading factors in fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.
Separately, Ogun State police confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV has been taken into custody for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.
The accident comes just weeks after Joshua’s high-profile return to the ring, intensifying concern among fans about both his physical recovery and the emotional toll of losing two long-standing members of his inner circle. Officials say he will continue recuperating privately while investigations into the crash continue.
