Australian police have opened an investigation into a historical sexual assault allegation made by actress Ruby Rose against singer Katy Perry, following claims about an alleged incident at a Melbourne nightclub in 2010. Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are investigating an alleged incident at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s central business district. Police declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Rose, known for Orange Is the New Black and Batwoman, made the allegation earlier this week in a now-deleted social media post responding to an article about Perry. She alleged that the incident took place at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne in 2010. Perry has denied the allegation. Her representative told media outlets that Rose’s claims were “categorically false” and described them as “dangerous reckless lies.” The representative has not issued a further public comment since police confirmed the investigation. Rose initially wrote online that she was not interested in filing a police report. However, she later said she had decided to make a report and could no longer speak publicly about the matter because of police procedures. She described that step as a relief and said it would allow her to begin the healing process.
A former manager of the now-closed nightclub has said both Perry and Rose were at the venue on the night in question, but said he did not witness any assault. He recalled the night as crowded and difficult to manage because of the presence of high-profile guests. The allegation surfaced after renewed public attention on Perry, including her appearance at Coachella, where she was seen reacting to Justin Bieber’s performance. Reports said she attended the festival with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to whom she has been romantically linked.
Perry released her seventh studio album, 143, in 2024 and later embarked on a world tour. In April 2025, she was among six women who travelled to the edge of space on a Blue Origin flight. Police have not announced any charges. The matter remains under investigation, and Perry is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
