Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has made history by winning a record-breaking fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, defeating Mali 78-64 in a thrilling final on Sunday.
The victory marks Nigeria’s seventh overall AfroBasket championship and extends their unbeaten streak to 29 games—a run that dates back to 2015—further solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.

The final was closely contested, with both teams tied at 41-41 at halftime. However, Nigeria surged ahead in the fourth quarter, with Amy Okonkwo delivering a game-high 17 points and leading the charge in a dominant closing stretch.
D’Tigress finished the tournament with impressive stats, averaging 77.5 points per game—the highest in the competition—and leading in field goal and three-point shooting percentages. While Mali led in rebounds (48.5) and assists (22) per game, Nigeria’s sharp shooting and depth proved decisive.
Coaching Milestone
Head coach Rena Wakama also made history, becoming the first woman to win two consecutive AfroBasket titles. Her leadership has transformed D’Tigress into a continental powerhouse, with the team praised for its resilience, discipline, and strategic play.
