President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of six Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) to oversee Federal Government-owned hospitals in Akure, Gombe, Azare, Lafiya, Maiduguri, and Kafanchan.
The announcement was made in a statement released on Friday by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that all appointments are for a four-year tenure, effective from the respective dates of assumption of office.
President Tinubu congratulated the newly appointed and reappointed CMDs, urging them to uphold “the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and service delivery” in their leadership roles.
He further reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality medical services are accessible to all Nigerians.
Among the appointees, Prof. Olusegun Sylvester Ojo has been named the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Akure, in Ondo State. A seasoned medical expert, he previously held the position of pioneer Chief Medical Director at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital. In Gombe, Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi has been reappointed as the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital following his commendable leadership and contributions to the institution’s development during his first term.
Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, who had been serving as the Acting CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Azare, Bauchi State, has now been confirmed as the substantive Chief Medical Director. Similarly, Dr. Ikrama Hassan has been appointed to lead the newly upgraded Federal Teaching Hospital in Lafiya, Nasarawa State. A consultant physician, Dr. Hassan had previously served as the Medical Director of Dalhatu Ibrahim Arab Specialist Hospital before its elevation to a teaching hospital.
In Maiduguri, Borno State, Dr. Ali Mohammed Ramat, a renowned Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon, has been appointed as the Chief Medical Director of the newly established National Orthopedic Hospital. Meanwhile, in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Dr. Haruna Abubakar Shehu, a Consultant Family Physician, has been named the Chief Medical Director of the newly created Federal Medical Centre.
The statement also highlighted that Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi’s second and final term as CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, commenced on September 5, 2024.
Additionally, Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum officially assumed his role as CMD of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare, Bauchi State, on December 6, 2024.
