Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been announced as the winner of the presidential primary of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s emerging political realignments.

The party leadership declared Atiku the victor following the conclusion of its primary election process, where delegates reportedly cast their votes to select the party’s flagbearer. Officials of the party said the exercise was conducted in line with internal democratic procedures and party guidelines governing candidate selection.

According to the announcement, Atiku emerged with a clear majority of delegate support, positioning him as the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming election cycle. The result is expected to reshape political calculations within the opposition space as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 polls in the Nigeria.

Party representatives described the outcome as a reflection of confidence in Atiku’s political experience and national profile, noting that the primary process was competitive and involved participation from accredited delegates across different states.

The development comes as political parties across the country intensify internal reorganisations and strategic alliances ahead of the next general election. Analysts say the emergence of Atiku as a candidate under a new platform could significantly alter existing political dynamics, particularly within opposition blocs seeking to challenge the ruling establishment.

Observers also note that the declaration may trigger further consultations among political stakeholders as parties assess possible coalitions and alignments ahead of the electoral contest.

While reactions continue to emerge, the African Democratic Congress maintained that its primary election was transparent and reflected the will of its delegates. The party added that it remains committed to strengthening its structures and presenting a competitive option to voters in 2027.

Atiku’s nomination is expected to intensify political activity in the months ahead as campaigns gradually take shape and parties refine their strategies for what is anticipated to be a closely contested election.
