OWERRI, Nigeria — Former Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Imo East Senatorial District, also known as Owerri Zone, ahead of the 2027 general election.
Madumere secured the ticket during the PDP senatorial primary held at the party’s state secretariat in Owerri. Some reports said he emerged through a consensus arrangement, while others described the contest as a keenly contested primary involving other aspirants, including Hon. Greg Egu and High Chief Summers Nwokie.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission monitored the exercise, which party leaders described as peaceful. The PDP said the outcome reflected unity within its Imo chapter and strengthened its chances of making a strong showing in the 2027 elections.
In his acceptance speech, Madumere thanked party leaders, delegates and supporters for the confidence reposed in him. He said his emergence was not merely a personal victory, but a call to service, unity and responsible representation for the people of Owerri Zone.
“I assure you today that I will not disappoint you,” Madumere said. “I remain committed to quality representation that will attract development, empower our youths, support our women, and restore the voice and dignity of Owerri Zone at the national level.”
The former deputy governor also appealed to aggrieved aspirants and party members to embrace reconciliation and work together for the success of the PDP in the general election. He said the party would need unity and discipline to overcome the challenges facing opposition parties in the state.
Madumere, who served as Chief of Staff and later Deputy Governor under former Governor Rochas Okorocha, said his experience in government would guide his legislative agenda if elected to the Senate. He promised to pursue people-oriented legislation focused on infrastructure, youth empowerment, women’s inclusion, small business support, education, agriculture and job creation.
The PDP also announced its other senatorial candidates in Imo State. Former House of Representatives member Jones Onyereri emerged as the party’s candidate for Imo West Senatorial District, while High Chief Mike Duru Ejiogu secured the ticket for Imo North Senatorial District.
Madumere’s nomination sets the stage for a competitive race in Imo East, where the PDP will seek to regain political ground in one of the state’s most influential senatorial districts.
