Nigeria recorded 1,374 fatalities from road traffic crashes in the fourth quarter of 2025, with men accounting for the majority of the deaths, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The figures were contained in the bureau’s Road Transport Data for Q4 2025, which showed that 1,085 males and 289 females lost their lives during the period.
The NBS reported that 2,731 road traffic crashes occurred in the quarter, marking a 12.2 percent increase from the 2,434 crashes recorded in Q3 2025, and a 6.72 percent rise compared with 2,559 crashes in Q4 2024.
“In Q4 2025, a total of 2,731 road traffic crashes were recorded. This represents an increase of 12.2 percent compared to the 2,434 crashes recorded in Q3 2025, and a 6.72 percent increase relative to the 2,559 crashes recorded in the corresponding period of 2024 (Q4 2024),” the report stated.
A breakdown by severity showed that serious crashes accounted for the largest share with 1,775 cases, followed by 677 fatal crashes, while minor crashes were the least at 279 cases.
Gender analysis indicated that men represented the majority of fatalities. “A total of 1,085 males were killed, representing 78.97 percent of total fatalities, while 289 females were killed, accounting for 21.03 percent,” the NBS said.
The bureau added that 8,726 people were injured during the period, including 6,561 males (75.19 percent) and 2,165 females (24.81 percent).
Data from the report also showed that 4,059 vehicles were involved in crashes in Q4 2025, reflecting a 9.41 percent increase from the 3,710 vehicles recorded in the previous quarter.
Regionally, the South-West recorded the highest number of crashes with 763 cases, followed by the North-Central with 744 cases, while the South-South reported the fewest incidents with 152 cases.
In terms of casualties, the North-Central zone recorded the highest figure with 2,649, followed by the North-West with 2,497, while the South-South recorded the lowest with 420 casualties, the report added.
