Israel has escalated its confrontation with Iran, vowing that whoever is chosen as the next Supreme Leader will be considered a target for assassination if they continue hostile policies toward Israel, its allies and Western interests.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated on social media that any successor to the late Ali Khamenei — killed in a joint U.S.-Israeli strike in Tehran — who advances what he called Iran’s “terror regime” agenda will be “a target for elimination.” The comments reflect Israel’s broad strategy to counter what it sees as existential threats from the Iranian leadership and its regional proxies.
Iran confirmed Khamenei’s death earlier this week following the airstrike that also killed several senior officials; Iranian sources say Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, has emerged as a frontrunner to succeed him.
The conflict has rapidly intensified, with Israeli and Iranian forces exchanging strikes. Explosions have been reported in both Tehran and Jerusalem, and regional flare-ups have included missile barrages and attacks in Lebanon and other Middle East countries. Casualties on both sides continue to rise amid ongoing military operations.
Tehran has vowed vigorous retaliation against Israel and its partners, describing the confrontation as a “battle for survival” and pledging full force in response to what Iranian officials characterise as unprovoked aggression.
