Jake Larson, affectionately known online as Papa Jake, has died at the age of 102. A decorated American World War II veteran and one of the few remaining D-Day survivors, Larson passed away peacefully on July 17, according to his granddaughter McKaela Larson.
Larson served in the U.S. Army and played a crucial role during the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944, contributing to the defeat of Nazi Germany. He also saw action during the Battle of the Bulge. In his later years, he found unexpected fame on TikTok, where he shared war stories with over 1.2 million followers, preserving history and honoring fallen comrades.
Three weeks before his passing, Papa Jake co-won an Emmy Award alongside journalist Christiane Amanpour for a moving interview commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
“He went peacefully and was even cracking jokes ‘til the very end,” McKaela said in a heartfelt TikTok video. She thanked fans for their love and support, promising to keep sharing his stories and legacy: “As Papa would say, love you all the mostest.”
Larson’s humor, humility, and passion for remembrance made him a cherished figure across generations. He made several visits to Normandy in recent years, inspiring many with his courage and dedication to keeping history alive.
In his words: “I didn’t even know what TikTok was until my granddaughter sent it to me one day.” He leaves behind a lasting legacy of honor, storytelling, and service.
