South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mcebisi Jonas as a special envoy to the United States, aiming to mend diplomatic ties strained since President Donald Trump’s return to office. Jonas, a former deputy finance minister and current chairman of MTN Group, is tasked with advancing South Africa’s diplomatic, trade, and bilateral priorities in the U.S.
This appointment follows the expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador to the U.S., Ebrahim Rasool, by the Trump administration. Rasool was declared persona non grata after making critical remarks about President Trump, leading to his departure from the U.S.
Jonas is known for his anti-corruption stance, notably testifying about attempted bribery by the Gupta family during Jacob Zuma’s presidency. In his new role, he will engage with U.S. officials and private-sector leaders to promote South Africa’s interests.
