Louis DeJoy has resigned as the U.S. Postmaster General, effective immediately. Deputy Postmaster General Doug Tulino will serve as interim leader until the Postal Service Board of Governors appoints a permanent successor.
DeJoy, who assumed the role in 2020 during President Donald Trump’s administration, implemented significant restructuring efforts aimed at addressing the Postal Service’s financial challenges. His tenure included a 10-year reorganization plan intended to bring financial stability to the agency. However, these initiatives faced criticism for causing service delays, particularly in rural communities.
Recently, DeJoy sought assistance from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team to identify further cost-cutting measures within the USPS. This collaboration led to plans for workforce reductions and budget cuts, sparking protests among postal workers.
The search for a new Postmaster General comes at a pivotal time, as the Trump administration has proposed integrating the USPS into the Commerce Department—a move that has raised legal and political concerns. Critics argue that such a restructuring could undermine the Postal Service’s independence and its ability to provide affordable, reliable service to all Americans.
As the USPS Board of Governors, with assistance from the global search firm Egon Zehnder, seeks DeJoy’s permanent replacement, stakeholders emphasize the importance of appointing a leader committed to modernizing the Postal Service while preserving its essential public service mission.
