President Bola Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to confirm Dr. Zainab Marwa as a member of the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), representing the North-East geopolitical zone.
The request was presented in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. It is in line with Section 2 of the NDDC Establishment Act and is intended to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of the North-East representative, Abdulrazak Namdas.
The letter noted that Namdas resigned from the commission’s board on March 30, 2026, to pursue the governorship election in Adamawa State, thereby creating the need for a replacement to ensure uninterrupted regional representation.
In his communication to the Senate, President Tinubu stated: “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the nomination of Dr. Zainab Marwa as member representing the North-East in the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission.” He urged lawmakers to give the nomination prompt consideration to guarantee full representation of the region on the board.
After the letter was read, the Senate President referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on NDDC for further legislative review. The committee is expected to examine the nomination and present its report within one to two weeks, paving the way for subsequent Senate action.
Meanwhile, the Senate also announced the establishment of a new committee to review bills transmitted from the House of Representatives for concurrence. The move is aimed at improving coordination between both chambers of the National Assembly and ensuring faster processing of legislation.
The committee will be chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), who is expected to oversee the harmonisation of bills and facilitate smoother legislative alignment between the Senate and the House.
The developments underscore ongoing efforts by the National Assembly to enhance legislative efficiency while maintaining balanced regional representation in federal institutions.
