A fuel-laden tanker burst into flames on Wednesday after toppling over at the NASFAT area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in injuries to two individuals and triggering significant traffic congestion.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the development during a briefing with our correspondent. He noted that both injured victims were promptly transported to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Shagamu for medical attention.
According to reports, the fire incident impacted six vehicles in total, comprising four heavy-duty trucks, a commercial bus, and a Toyota Camry sedan.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State also verified the explosion. Speaking to Channels Television, Florence Okpe, who serves as the Education Officer for the sector, said emergency personnel, including fire service units and FRSC teams, were already deployed to manage the scene.
TRACE provided additional context, confirming that the fire erupted on the outbound section of the expressway, heading towards Ibadan.
In an earlier update shared by Akinbiyi, he stated: “A fallen laden tanker at NASFAT turning outbound Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has exploded, traffic seriously affected, fire services contact, motorists coming from Lagos diverted through Christ Embassy camp. TRACE, FRSC, and the police are on the ground monitoring the situation.”
Authorities have urged road users to comply with traffic diversions and remain patient while emergency crews clear the area and restore normalcy.
