Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has been selected as the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, while also stepping down from his position as national chairman of the party.
Sowore’s emergence followed the party’s internal selection process, where delegates endorsed his candidacy to lead the AAC’s presidential bid. Party officials described the decision as part of efforts to strengthen internal democracy and reposition the party for the upcoming electoral contest.
In line with party provisions, Sowore’s resignation as national chairman was announced after his confirmation as flag bearer, paving the way for a new leadership structure within the AAC. The party is expected to begin the process of selecting a successor to oversee administrative affairs and organisational activities ahead of the elections.
Party representatives said the development reflects a commitment to separation of leadership roles, allowing the presidential candidate to focus on national campaigning while another official manages party administration. They added that the restructuring is intended to improve coordination and election preparedness.
Sowore, who has long been a prominent critic of successive Nigerian governments, is expected to campaign on issues including governance reform, anti-corruption, and improved public accountability. His candidacy marks another attempt to challenge Nigeria’s dominant political blocs in Nigeria.
The AAC leadership stated that the party remains committed to presenting itself as an alternative political platform for young Nigerians and reform-minded voters. They emphasised that the 2027 elections would be an opportunity to expand the party’s influence and deepen political participation.
While reactions to the development continue to emerge across political circles, the party has insisted that its internal processes were transparent and aligned with its constitutional guidelines.
With Sowore now officially positioned as the AAC presidential candidate, attention is expected to shift toward campaign strategy, coalition-building, and preparations for what is anticipated to be a highly competitive election cycle.
