The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has begun a strategic retreat in Kano State as part of efforts to harmonise reports and finalise the review of remuneration for political, public, and judicial office holders nationwide.
Declaring the session open, RMAFC Chairman and Federal Commissioner for Gombe State, Mohammed Usman, underscored the significance of the exercise in strengthening Nigeria’s governance framework.
He reminded participants that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) grants the commission the authority to set appropriate pay structures for office holders at all tiers of government.
Usman revealed that preliminary steps had already been taken to ensure the review reflects Nigeria’s current economic situation.
According to him, “The commission carefully considered a wide range of perspectives, including memoranda from stakeholders, public hearings, and ministerial submissions, while also drawing from economic indicators and remuneration practices in other countries.”
He clarified that the exercise was not just about adjusting salaries but also about ensuring fiscal responsibility.
“The commission has equally analysed the capacity of government to implement the review package, ensuring that recommendations remain fair, realistic, and sustainable,” he said.
The chairman further explained that the committee had been instructed to merge the initial report with a subsequent addendum into one comprehensive document that would guide implementation.
Calling for cooperation, Usman urged participants to bring their expertise to the table so that the retreat’s outcome would be balanced and beneficial to the country.
