A collapsed building in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos sparked frantic rescue efforts on Saturday morning, with five individuals pulled from the wreckage alive.
The structure, located on Oremeta Street and reportedly housing a local restaurant, gave way around 8 a.m., sending shockwaves through the neighborhood and drawing emergency responders to the scene.
Speaking to reporters, Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emphasized the agency’s determination to reach “ground zero” in their ongoing search for additional victims possibly trapped beneath the debris.
“There’s still work to be done,” Oke-Osanyitolu said. “Our team is committed to combing through every layer of rubble to ensure no one is left behind.”
Though concerns remain that there may be fatalities, officials have not confirmed any deaths as of the time of this report. Emergency personnel continue to dig through the collapsed site as worried onlookers gather nearby, hoping for good news.
Search and rescue operations are still in progress, with authorities urging residents to stay clear of the area to allow for smooth emergency access.
