The Tinubu administration is making a bold push for sustainable transportation in Nigeria’s Northeast with a nearly $100 million electric vehicle project. The Federal Executive Council has greenlit contracts to supply electric buses, tricycles, and charging infrastructure — a move aimed at reducing carbon emissions and boosting energy efficiency.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to environmentally friendly transportation. The approved contracts include 10 electric buses from Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited for N2.9 billion, set for delivery in six months. Meanwhile, Mutual Commitment Company Limited will provide 4,000 e-tricycles for N49.6 billion within nine months, and Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development will supply another 3,000 tricycles for N37.2 billion.
Additionally, Sinoma Investment International Limited will deliver 3,000 e-tricycles, while HNCEGC will supply various BYD electric vehicles for N16.3 billion. Charging infrastructure will be handled by KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited at a cost of N8.4 billion.
Funded by the NorthEast Development Commission, the project aligns with Tinubu’s October 2024 directive to procure e-vehicles, following his inspection of sample vehicles and charging equipment. This initiative promises a cleaner, more sustainable future for transportation in the region.
