The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule and dominated by allies of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has intensified efforts against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding the removal of 19 commissioners and political appointees.
In a letter issued Wednesday, Amaewhule accused the governor of making “illegal appointments” without legislative approval, violating the 1999 Constitution. He also insisted that Fubara submit a fresh list of nominees for proper screening within 48 hours.
The Speaker particularly criticized the appointment of Dagogo Iboroma as Attorney General without Assembly approval, arguing it contravened constitutional provisions.
However, Commissioner for Environment Sydney Tambari dismissed the lawmakers’ demands, stating, “They are acting on the stigma of their imagination and overstepping their bounds.” He asserted that all commissioners were properly screened by former Speaker Edison Ehie, who was legally recognized at the time.
Tambari insisted that the demand was “overtaken by events” and that the governor had no obligation to submit a new list. He also accused the lawmakers of misinterpreting a Supreme Court ruling, which he said concerned the 2024 budget, not appointments.
