The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 65-year-old man, Akpan Godwin, after he was allegedly caught with a large cache of live ammunition in Onitsha.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Saturday. According to him, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad based in Akwuzu carried out the operation on Friday at Nkpor, a town close to Onitsha.

“Police operatives acting on credible intelligence arrested one Akpan Godwin ‘m’, aged 65 years, in possession of 1,100 rounds of live ammunition,” Ikenga revealed.

He added that Godwin admitted during questioning that he was involved in the illegal distribution of ammunition and also gave names of other individuals connected to the business.

“Meanwhile, the operatives have stepped up the investigation and manhunt to uncover and apprehend all accomplices,” Ikenga stated, assuring the public that efforts were ongoing to dismantle the wider criminal ring.

The South-East state has battled recurring insecurity linked to armed groups, leading to an upsurge in gun trafficking and the circulation of illegal weapons. These arms have fueled violent crimes ranging from armed robbery and kidnappings to cult clashes and attacks by non-state actors.

The latest arrest adds to a series of police breakthroughs in the fight against crime. In August, the Anambra Police Command reported the capture of four suspects in Onitsha and Obosi during separate operations targeting arms smugglers. Just this past Friday, the police also announced the recovery of stolen high-tension cables, transformer parts, and improvised weapons, with four suspects detained. One other suspect was fatally injured after attempting to evade arrest.
