Chelsea have parted ways with head coach Enzo Maresca, bringing an abrupt end to his spell at Stamford Bridge less than two years after his appointment.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the club confirmed the Italian’s departure by mutual agreement, saying both sides believed a change was needed as the season enters a decisive stretch across multiple competitions.
“Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company,” the statement read.
“During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”
Maresca was appointed after guiding Leicester City to the Championship title in 2024, arriving in West London with a reputation for progressive, possession-based football and a strong track record in player development. His tenure produced European silverware and a global title, but inconsistency in the Premier League and questions over the team’s domestic form increased pressure on his position as expectations remained high under the club’s ambitious ownership.
Despite continental success, Chelsea have struggled at times to assert themselves in the league, with patchy performances undermining their push for a top-four finish. Internal discussions over the direction of the project and looming key fixtures reportedly accelerated the decision to seek a new managerial course.
The board’s statement underlined that “key objectives” remain alive on four fronts, signalling that the hierarchy still expects a strong finish to the campaign, particularly in the race for Champions League qualification and the latter stages of knockout competitions.
No interim or permanent successor has yet been officially named, but the club indicated that an appointment is expected before Sunday’s high-profile Premier League clash against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. That fixture will present an immediate and demanding test for the new man in charge, inheriting a talented but still-developing squad assembled at significant expense.
Chelsea concluded their announcement by thanking Maresca and his staff and wishing them well in their future endeavours, while supporters now turn their attention to the board’s next move in another pivotal managerial reshuffle in the post-Roman Abramovich era.
