The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced a strategic decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region of Nigeria, limiting aspirants to the South-South, South-East, or South-West. The move is seen as part of efforts to balance regional representation, strengthen internal unity, and increase the party’s chances ahead of the next general elections.
According to insiders, the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) reached the resolution after weeks of consultations with stakeholders across the country. Transitioning from broad deliberations to a firm stand, the party leadership argued that zoning the presidency to the South not only reflects fairness and inclusivity but also aligns with Nigeria’s rotational power-sharing principles.
The South-East, long considered marginalized in Nigeria’s power structure, is expected to mount a strong claim, with calls for the PDP to field an Igbo candidate. At the same time, the South-South region, which produced former President Goodluck Jonathan, remains a political powerhouse with significant electoral influence. Meanwhile, the South-West, home to influential leaders and a vibrant political base, is also positioning itself as a formidable contender.
Party officials stressed that the zoning decision is designed to minimize internal conflict and provide clarity for aspirants early enough to consolidate grassroots support. Analysts note that this strategy could give the PDP a competitive edge in 2027, especially as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to grapple with governance challenges and internal divisions.
However, not all voices within the party are in agreement. Some northern leaders have expressed reservations, insisting that zoning should not override merit or national acceptability. Transitioning into campaign mode, PDP leaders have urged all members to close ranks, emphasizing unity as the foundation for electoral success.
