Former President Olusegun Obasanjo emphasized that Africa’s future hinges on committed, transformational leadership capable of prioritizing infrastructure, human capital, and economic development. Speaking during a visit by Dr. Greg Mills at the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI) in Abeokuta, Obasanjo underscored that the continent holds the potential to achieve lasting prosperity with the right caliber of leaders
Describing the kind of leadership Africa requires, Obasanjo stated:
“Africa needs leaders who are committed to the infrastructural, human and capital development of Africa.”
The remarks were delivered at an Executive Syndicate Class for top CEOs, where Dr. Mills—former National Director of the South Africa Institute of International Affairs—highlighted the key traits that distinguish visionary leadership from effective management. He pointed out that true leaders must:
- Motivate teams with a compelling vision
- Implement bold and strategic policies
- Resist distractions from power or popularity
- Demonstrate a balance of passion, patience, courage, and compassion.
Obasanjo’s call resonates within a broader demand for leaders who can transcend short-term gains to deliver sustainable development and pan-African unity.
- Infrastructure Development: Committed leaders will prioritize building roads, hospitals, and utilities—fundamental for economic growth.
- Human Capital: Investment in education and healthcare is crucial to empower Africa’s growing population.
- Strategic Vision: Bold policy actions, not just reactive fixes, are needed for long-term stability.
Obasanjo and the OOLI continue to promote this leadership philosophy through training programs and open dialogue, aiming to cultivate a new generation of African leaders capable of driving meaningful progress.
In his view, Africa stands at the threshold of a transformative era—but only if accompanied by the right leaders with unwavering commitment.
