The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 14 political associations including the African Democratic Assembly (ADA) and the Alliance for True Progress (ATP), have successfully scaled through the initial screening process and will now proceed to the next stage of registration as political parties.
In a statement released in Abuja, INEC explained that the clearance followed a rigorous review of applications submitted by several political groups seeking official recognition. The Commission noted that only those that met the constitutional and legal requirements advanced to the next stage.
“We have carefully assessed all applications, and 14 associations, including ADA and ATP, have satisfied the necessary conditions. They will now move forward in the registration process,” INEC stated.
With Nigeria’s political arena already crowded, the entry of new parties could reshape the competition ahead of future elections. Political analysts believe the inclusion of fresh parties will provide more platforms for citizens to engage in the democratic process.
“Nigerians are looking for alternatives, and if these associations transform into fully registered parties, they could energize voter participation and broaden political representation,” a political commentator noted:
INEC clarified that the cleared associations must now undergo further assessments, including verification of their offices, membership strength, and compliance with electoral laws. Only after fulfilling these requirements will they be granted full registration as political parties.
The Commission emphasized that it remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s multi-party democracy by ensuring transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to the law in the registration process.
