Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has urged the state’s House of Assembly to prioritize peace and the welfare of the people. Speaking on Thursday in Okrika, he emphasized the need for stability in governance.
“It is important at this stage that we all embrace peace,” Fubara said, calling for full implementation of the Supreme Court’s February 28, 2025, ruling.
“The Supreme Court has made its judgment, we don’t have any option but to abide by it, and by the special grace of God, we have started the process,” he added.
Despite his appeal, tensions persist between Fubara and the Assembly, which is largely aligned with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. On Wednesday, the governor was blocked from entering the Assembly Quarters to re-present the 2025 budget, with Speaker Martins Amaewhule denying prior notification of the visit.
Meanwhile, Wike defended the lawmakers, stating in Abuja that they had the right to remove Fubara if he committed impeachable offenses, such as withholding their salaries.
The Supreme Court upheld Amaewhule as Speaker, barred financial institutions from funding the state government until court orders are obeyed, and nullified the October 2024 local elections, ordering a fresh poll and the budget’s re-presentation.
