Doyin Okupe, a former presidential aide, has died at 72, his family confirmed on Friday.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described his passing as a “personal loss,” highlighting his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy. “Dr. Okupe’s departure leaves a void that will not be easily filled,” he said.
Okupe, a medical doctor, served as Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan and was the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign Director-General before resigning over ideological differences.
Last year, he revealed his battle with cancer, which led to significant weight loss. “When I started chemotherapy, I was 127kg… then I came down to 97kg,” he shared.
Born in Iperu, Ogun State, he studied medicine at the University of Ibadan before transitioning into politics.
