Several prominent figures, including former governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, ex-Senator Shehu Sani, and former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, are reportedly among those nominated by the federal government for ambassadorial appointments.
Sources indicate that these individuals are currently undergoing security screenings, with their details having been forwarded to the relevant agencies. The nominations come almost a year after the recall of Nigeria’s ambassadors, which has raised concerns about the potential impact on the country’s diplomatic affairs.
The nominations are still in progress, with security agencies carrying out background checks before any official announcements are made. One nominee confirmed his appointment on the condition of anonymity, but other individuals declined to comment on the matter.
A Presidency official, speaking anonymously, clarified the delay in releasing the names, stating, “The nominees are currently undergoing security checks with the Department of State Services (DSS). Once they pass the security review, the final list will be shared. Only those who have been cleared will be officially named. The process is ongoing, and we expect to have the list ready by the end of this month.”
