The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded to recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting possible U.S. military action in Nigeria, stating that the country’s internal challenges are political and structural, not ethnic or religious as often portrayed.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the ADC condemned Trump’s comments as reckless and uninformed, emphasizing that Nigeria’s crisis is a product of poor governance, corruption, and institutional decay, not sectarian conflict.
“The narrative that Nigeria is collapsing along ethnic or religious lines is misleading,” the statement read. “Our problems are rooted in leadership failure and inequitable distribution of resources — issues that can only be resolved through democratic reform, not foreign intervention.”
The party urged the U.S. government to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and support constructive engagement rather than threats of military involvement, which it said could destabilize West Africa and worsen humanitarian conditions.
ADC also called on Nigerian leaders to unite and strengthen domestic institutions, arguing that a divided response to external pressure would only embolden those seeking to exploit the country’s vulnerabilities.
“We urge President Bola Tinubu to remain firm, diplomatic, and strategic in defending Nigeria’s sovereignty,” the party added. “What Nigeria needs is dialogue, reform, and international cooperation — not intimidation.”
The statement concluded by reaffirming the ADC’s commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic stability, urging citizens to reject divisive narratives and focus on building a stronger, more inclusive nation.
