A deadly tanker explosion in Dan Magaji, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Monday, August 11, has claimed several lives. The crash, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. near Rochas Foundation School along the Kaduna-Kano Expressway bypass, involved two fuel tankers and two passenger-loaded Golf cars.
Eyewitnesses reported five loud explosions that sent massive flames and thick smoke billowing over the highway. All passengers in the Golf cars died instantly, except for one driver who survived with severe burns. Emergency responders quickly arrived, cordoning off the scene and redirecting traffic while rescue and recovery operations continued.
Authorities have not yet released an official casualty count. The incident adds to a troubling series of fuel-related disasters in Nigeria this year. On January 19, 98 people were killed while scooping fuel from a crashed tanker at Dikko Junction, and on January 25, another tanker explosion on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway killed at least 21 people.
The recurring tragedies underscore Nigeria’s growing challenge with tanker accidents and fire-related road fatalities, which have caused significant loss of life and property in 2025.
