The recent escalation of violence in Plateau State, Nigeria, has drawn significant national attention. On Sunday night, a deadly attack occurred in Zike hamlet, Kimakpa community, Bassa Local Government Area, resulting in the deaths of at least 49 individuals, with some reports estimating the toll at 52, The assailants, suspected to be Fulani herders, also looted and destroyed homes, leaving many residents displaced.
In response, President Bola Tinubu has condemned the violence and instructed Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to take decisive action to restore peace. The President emphasized the need for unity among the state’s diverse communities and pledged federal support for efforts aimed at resolving the underlying causes of the conflict.
Governor Mutfwang has characterized the attacks as “genocidal” and suggested they are orchestrated by terrorist groups. He reported that over 6,000 residents have sought refuge in churches and religious centers due to the violence. The Inspector-General of Police has also deployed a counter-terrorism squad to the affected areas to enhance security and prevent further attacks. This tragic event underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the persistent security challenges in Plateau State.
