Communities in Dandi and Suru local government areas of Kebbi State have been hit by severe flooding that destroyed homes, farmlands, and two major bridges.
The flood, which struck on Thursday, washed away the bridge in Fana town as well as another linking the Dakingari-Kyangakwai road. Many families were displaced as houses and large portions of farmland were submerged.
Deputy Governor Senator Umar Tafida led a government delegation to the affected areas on Saturday, where he delivered relief assistance and financial aid worth ₦70 million. He assured residents that reconstruction of the collapsed bridges would begin soon.
According to Tafida, the state government donated ₦50 million and 600 bags of rice to victims in Fana, Maigwaza, and Tungar Beddi communities in Dandi LGA. Another ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice were given to affected households in Aljannare, Suru LGA, while Kampani village in Argungu LGA received ₦10 million and 250 bags of rice.
He also sympathised with the victims, urging them to view the disaster as an act of God while praying for divine protection against future tragedies. Tafida advised those living in riverine areas to move to safer ground to reduce the risks of flooding.
Local leaders welcomed the government’s intervention. The Chairman of Dandi LGA, Mansur Isah, confirmed that one life was lost, with many homes destroyed and vast farms submerged. Similarly, Suru LGA Chairman, Muhammad Suru, expressed gratitude to Governor Nasir Idris’s administration for the quick response.
During a visit to displaced persons at the Kamfani camp in Argungu, the deputy governor pledged further support, announcing another ₦10 million donation along with 250 bags of rice.
Responding on behalf of the community, the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Mera, praised the state government’s timely assistance and assured continued support for Governor Idris’s leadership.
