India has postponed the upcoming India-Africa Summit following growing concerns over the Ebola outbreak affecting parts of Africa, officials said on Wednesday, as health authorities intensify efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
The summit, which was expected to bring together African leaders, diplomats and business representatives in New Delhi, was delayed after consultations between Indian authorities, African governments and international health agencies. A new date for the gathering has not yet been announced.
Indian officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure amid fears that increased international travel could heighten health risks. Authorities stressed that the move was aimed at protecting delegates and ensuring public safety rather than isolating affected countries.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the government remained committed to its partnership with African nations and would continue diplomatic and economic engagements despite the postponement.
“The decision has been taken in view of the evolving public health situation and after careful consultations with all stakeholders,” the ministry stated. “India remains fully committed to strengthening cooperation with African partners.”
The postponement comes as the Ebola outbreak in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to worsen, with health officials reporting rising fatalities and growing pressure on medical facilities. The World Health Organization has already deployed emergency supplies and personnel to support containment efforts in affected areas.
Indian health authorities have also stepped up screening procedures at airports and seaports, particularly for passengers arriving from countries considered high-risk. Hospitals in major cities have reportedly been placed on alert, while surveillance systems have been reinforced to detect any suspected cases quickly.
Several African diplomats acknowledged the concerns surrounding the outbreak but expressed hope that the summit would be rescheduled once the health situation improves.
The India-Africa Summit is regarded as a major platform for political dialogue, trade negotiations and development partnerships between India and African nations. Discussions for this year’s edition were expected to focus on infrastructure investment, technology, healthcare cooperation, energy security and trade expansion.
Analysts said the postponement could temporarily slow some planned agreements and bilateral meetings, though both sides are likely to continue engagements through diplomatic channels and virtual consultations.
Public health experts have meanwhile urged governments to avoid panic, emphasizing that stronger surveillance, rapid response measures and international cooperation remain essential in containing Ebola outbreaks before they spread across borders.
