Israeli authorities have arrested a former senior military legal officer following the circulation of a shocking video allegedly showing the abuse of detainees by Israeli soldiers.
According to reports from local media, the suspect, whose name has not yet been officially released, once served as the chief legal adviser for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). He was taken into custody after investigators linked him to the unauthorized leak and mishandling of classified material related to the incident.
The video, which surfaced online last week, appears to show soldiers mistreating blindfolded Palestinian detainees, prompting widespread outrage and demands for accountability. Human rights organizations and political figures have called for a transparent investigation into both the alleged abuse and the source of the footage.
In a statement, the Israeli police confirmed the arrest, noting that it was part of a broader investigation into security breaches and misconduct within the military. Authorities also emphasized that the former officer’s detention does not imply guilt but is necessary to ensure a full and impartial inquiry.
The IDF has since condemned the actions depicted in the video, describing them as “completely inconsistent with the army’s values and code of conduct.” It assured the public that any soldier found guilty of abuse would face severe disciplinary measures.
The case has intensified public debate over accountability and transparency within Israel’s military justice system, as pressure mounts on the government to uphold human rights standards amid ongoing regional tensions.
