Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce set a Super Bowl record on Sunday by surpassing Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for the most receptions in Super Bowl history. Kelce achieved this milestone during his third catch in the fourth quarter of a 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Heading into Super Bowl LIX, Kelce had 31 receptions in his first four Super Bowls and needed three more to break Rice’s record of 33 catches from his four Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers. Kelce finished the game with four catches for 39 yards.
Although it took Kelce a fifth Super Bowl to break Rice’s record, it’s a remarkable achievement for the tight end to surpass one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history during the Super Bowl. Earlier in the postseason, Kelce had already broken another of Rice’s playoff records by posting a 117-yard receiving game against the Houston Texans, marking his ninth 100-yard playoff game — the most ever.
Kelce’s postseason accomplishments are extraordinary. Before Sunday’s Super Bowl, he had accumulated 350 Super Bowl receiving yards (fourth in history), 174 postseason catches (first), 2,039 postseason receiving yards (second), and 20 receiving touchdowns (second). Despite the Chiefs’ loss, Kelce’s achievement cements his legacy as one of the finest postseason players in NFL history, adding yet another record to his already impressive collection.
