Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna has made history by breaking the men’s discus throw world record twice in a single competition. At the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting in Ramona, Oklahoma, on April 13, 2025, the 22-year-old athlete first surpassed his own previous record with a throw of 74.89 meters, then extended it to an unprecedented 75.56 meters in the fourth round. This achievement marks the first time any athlete has thrown beyond the 75-meter mark in the event.
Alekna’s prior world record of 74.35 meters, set at the same venue in 2024, had already broken a longstanding mark from 1986. His latest performance not only cements his dominance in the sport but also builds upon his silver medal finish at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he narrowly missed gold by just three centimeters to Jamaica’s Roje Stona .
In the same competition, Australia’s Matt Denny briefly held the world record with a throw of 74.78 meters before Alekna’s subsequent attempts reclaimed and extended the record. Denny’s performance, however, remains significant, as he became the first Australian to surpass the 70-meter barrier in discus.
