Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to several Senegalese football supporters imprisoned in Morocco, citing what officials described as “humanitarian reasons.”
The decision followed diplomatic engagements between Moroccan and Senegalese authorities after the fans were detained during disturbances linked to a recent football match involving clubs from both countries.
According to Moroccan officials, the supporters had been serving prison terms over offences connected to crowd violence, property damage and public disorder during post-match unrest. However, the royal pardon led to their release ahead of the completion of their sentences.
In a statement carried by state media, Moroccan authorities said the move reflected the King’s commitment to humanitarian values and the strong relationship between Morocco and Senegal.
The released supporters were reportedly handed over to Senegalese diplomatic representatives for arrangements regarding their return home.
Senegalese officials welcomed the decision, describing it as a gesture that would further strengthen ties between the two African nations. Diplomatic sources said discussions had been ongoing for weeks over the fate of the detained fans.
Families of the supporters and football groups in Senegal also expressed relief following news of the pardon.
The incident had drawn attention across West Africa, with rights groups and sports organisations calling for fair treatment of the detained fans while urging supporters to avoid violence during international sporting events.
Moroccan authorities reiterated that while the country remains committed to maintaining public order, humanitarian considerations and bilateral relations also played a role in the decision.
Analysts say the pardon underscores Morocco’s growing diplomatic engagement across Africa, particularly with West African countries, where Rabat has strengthened political, economic and sporting partnerships in recent years.
Football remains a major cultural force across the continent, but authorities have repeatedly warned against hooliganism and violence linked to club and international matches.
The release of the Senegalese supporters is expected to ease tensions surrounding the incident and reinforce cooperation between Moroccan and Senegalese officials ahead of future sporting competitions.
