Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that veteran right-back Kyle Walker has requested to leave the club, seeking a move abroad in the upcoming January transfer window.
Walker, 34, was notably absent from the squad during City’s 8-0 FA Cup win over Salford City. Guardiola revealed that Walker approached City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, to explore opportunities overseas to conclude his career.
“Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad at the end of his career,” Guardiola stated. “He’s been crucial for us, but his mind seems set on exploring other opportunities. That doesn’t mean it will happen, but we’ll see.”
Despite signing a three-year contract extension and being named club captain following interest from Bayern Munich in 2023, Walker’s position at City has become less secure. Interest from Saudi Arabia last summer also failed to materialize into a move.
Guardiola emphasized Walker’s significance to City’s success, particularly after his arrival from Tottenham in 2017. “We can’t imagine our success over the years without Kyle. He’s been vital for the club and the national team,” Guardiola remarked.
City now face uncertainty over whether Walker’s desire to leave will lead to a transfer in January, with Guardiola reiterating his gratitude for Walker’s contributions.
