Barcelona continues to grapple with financial and regulatory hurdles, as their second appeal to secure a precautionary registration for Dani Olmo has been denied. This decision means Olmo, along with his teammate Pau Victor, will be unable to represent the club from January 1 onwards.
La Liga had initially approved temporary registrations for the players during the first half of the season, allowing Barcelona time to address financial fair play (FFP) requirements. However, with these registrations set to expire on December 31, Barcelona has been exploring new revenue avenues, such as the sale of VIP boxes at the refurbished Camp Nou. While this strategy could align with FFP rules, it remains pending La Liga’s approval.
The rejection of Barcelona’s latest appeal was welcomed by La Liga, which emphasized that the club had failed to meet the conditions necessary for the precautionary measures sought. Additionally, the league reaffirmed the authority of its economic commission, a framework Barcelona had previously helped to establish.
The club’s financial difficulties have also limited their ability to leverage recent revenue initiatives, including a new sponsorship deal with Nike, which fell short of addressing the salary cap issues. If the VIP box sales are not approved, Barcelona may have to rely on personal guarantees from board members, a method previously used to register key players like Ronald Araujo and Gavi.
Olmo, signed from RB Leipzig for €60 million in the summer, has proven to be a valuable addition. However, Barcelona’s ongoing financial constraints, exacerbated by La Liga’s strict enforcement of FFP regulations, have created a precarious situation for both the player and the club as they approach the critical year-end deadline.
