The global rise of Afrobeats has been marked by milestones once considered out of reach for African musicians — and Burna Boy has added another historic achievement.
The Nigerian superstar has become the first African artist to place at least one song on the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive years, from 2021 through 2026.
The record was confirmed when “Only You,” his collaboration with J. Cole, debuted at No. 78 on the chart dated February 21, 2026. The cross-genre track appears on Cole’s album The Fall-Off and blends Afro-fusion, reggae, and introspective rap.
The achievement reflects Burna Boy’s sustained influence in global music. The Billboard Hot 100 — which ranks songs by streaming, airplay, and sales — remains the industry’s main benchmark of mainstream success.
His chart journey began in 2021 with a feature on Justin Bieber’s “Loved By You,” followed by the global hit “Last Last” in 2022, his longest-charting single.
He returned in 2023 with “Sittin’ On Top Of The World” featuring 21 Savage and “Talibans II” with Byron Messia. In 2024, he added “Just Like Me” with Seyi Vibez and 21 Savage, as well as “We Pray” with Coldplay. His appearance on Gunna’s “WGFT” extended the streak into 2025, paving the way for 2026’s “Only You.”
The latest entry brings his total Hot 100 appearances to eight, placing him among the most charted African artists ever.
The milestone comes amid a booming era for African music, often accompanied by fan debates comparing stars such as Wizkid and Davido. Burna Boy’s uninterrupted chart run sets a new benchmark for sustained international visibility.
The moment also highlights wider African success. Tems recently became the first African female artist to reach seven Hot 100 entries, with her single “What You Need” debuting on the chart and giving her two simultaneous placements.
Burna Boy’s chart run follows a busy period. His 2025 album No Sign of Weakness earned a Best Global Music Album nomination at the 2026 Grammys, where Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia won, while Tyla took Best African Music Performance.
On stage, he remains a major festival draw, set to headline the Reggae Land Festival and perform at Afro Nation Portugal in 2026.
Born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu in Port Harcourt, Burna Boy has built his career around Afro-fusion — blending Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and pop. His consistent chart presence reflects not a single breakout moment, but a sustained global impact that continues to carry African music deeper into the mainstream.
