LAGOS, Nigeria — A Lagos coroner has ordered a full inquest into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, after the family alleged that medical negligence at a private hospital contributed to the child’s death. Proceedings are set to begin on April 14, 2026, at the Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos.
The decision followed a preliminary sitting on Wednesday before Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji, who fixed the hearing date after lawyers for the family argued that the toddler’s death was “unnatural” and linked to medical intervention. Some reports said the inquest could continue on additional dates after the opening hearing in April. Nkanu died in early January after receiving treatment at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing diagnostic procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos. According to multiple reports, he had been scheduled for medical transfer to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States, and had undergone pre-flight procedures including an MRI and a spinal tap before his condition worsened.
Adichie and her family have accused Euracare of serious medical negligence. In allegations first reported in January and later confirmed by family representatives, the novelist said her son was denied oxygen and was excessively sedated, leading to seizures, cardiac arrest and ultimately death. Her legal team has sought medical records, CCTV footage and other hospital documentation as part of efforts to establish what happened. Euracare has denied wrongdoing, saying the child was already critically ill on arrival and that its staff acted in accordance with accepted medical standards. The hospital has expressed sympathy to the family while rejecting claims that negligence caused the toddler’s death.
The case has drawn wide attention in Nigeria because of Adichie’s public profile and because it has revived debate about medical accountability and hospital standards in the country. The writer, best known for works including Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, has largely kept her family life private. Nkanu was one of twin boys born to the couple by surrogacy; Adichie is also mother to a daughter born in 2016.
The April inquest is expected to hear expert evidence as the court seeks to determine the cause and circumstances of the child’s death.
